To know a person, know her roots. Renee Lachman’s roots start in New York, with a childhood mixing the urban landscape in Queens and the wilderness of summers spent at her  grandmother’s farmhouse upstate. The sense of being an independent explorer and collector never left her and contributes greatly to her work now. She observes, collects, and pieces together fragments that reflect her questions about ancestry, memory, and the tangle of past and present.

Renée T. Lachman received her MFA in painting from George Washington University and a BFA in painting and

drawing from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  She has shown widely in the Washington area and has exhibited in Philadelphia, and New York.  Her teaching affiliations include Montgomery College, The Art League, and Northern Virginia Community College.  Renée was a Maryland State Arts Council artist-in-residence.

Renee began working at NGA as a copyist in April of 2023.

Whether it’s researching a painter’s palette or textures, being a copyist is like walking in another artist’s shoes. Studying past artists is inspirational and educational and it makes one appreciate what the masters were able to accomplish with all their limitations.
